A ten story federal courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City. Only the fanciest offices and courtrooms for our judges. We wonder why we have a deficit in this country with such extravagant spending. Oh well, at least we get a nice big box out of it. The facade on this building will make or break it since it is one big box.
They did an absolutely amazing job bringing this beauty back into its glory. No costs were spared in making this one of Salt Lake City's crown jewels. I think that it now has to be one of the most beautiful jewelery stores anywhere.
This plaza was under lots of controversy because the LDS Church purchased the right of way and closed this part of Main Street to create this beautiful plaza to connect Temple Square with the LDS Church Headquarters block. This is the view looking south across the reflecting pool and down Main Street. You can see in the distance our new highrise, 222 S Main, with her crown all lit up looking mighty fine.
I loved it there. I spent most youth there. I saw movies there, shopped there, played video games and ate there. A wonderful place. However, when you looked at the mall of the exterior, it was really ugly. Massive beige brick walls with a few entrances and some signage on the outside. Nothing to get too excited about. Well, this shot below is looking south across South Temple from Temple Square. In the old days, this used to be the entrance to the Crossroads Mall. Picture a giant beige brick wall, at the top you had windows for what used to be a restaurant, then at ground level on the left you had McDonald's and on the right you had Borders Books. Now, you have this. So much better don't you think?
I think that it looks great with all of the new additions that have been built. This picture is from last night and is of the new office building at the City Creek Center. I really like that it is all brick and has that old-time classical look to it. This building has great character to it. For those of you who don't know, this is where the South Temple entrance to the ZCMI food court was.
A brand new high-rise in downtown Salt Lake City. It is located right on Main Street. Right next ot a TRAX stop and the Gallivan Center. Downtown continues to get more and more exciting with everything happening. The great thing is that this building is almost full and the need is coming for another tower downtown. I can't wait as I know that Hamilton Partners has plans for another one on the corner of 100 South and Main. Hamilton Partners did such a great job with 222 S Main that it makes me very excited to see what they do with the one a block up. Maybe it could be called 111 S Main????
I don't know why I stopped for a year. Anyway, a lot is happening with the new Courthouse, the many apartments, condos, office, etc going in downtown, most who have not been around for a while would have a tough time recognizing the place. That brings me to this photo I took on Main Street a few months back. In the photo, everything from the Montgomery Ward and to the south (right) of it are slated for demolition. This would also take out the Prudential Building which people either really like or really hate. The Prudential is the one with the spires on top of it. The Montgomery Ward building is the red brick one. Future plans call for a 20-25 story office tower where the Montgomery Ward building is and then from the Prudential building and the little one's next to it a "Broadway Style" theater that would seat about 2,400. The theater is sorely needed in this city as Capitol Theater just can't support the shows or the numbers of people that want to see the shows anymore. I imagine that in the next couple of years this block should look drastically different.

I went downtown Saturday evening at about 11:30PM and set-up the camera. I set-up at the head of Main Street on South Temple. Not a lot of people there. I guess most everyone else was on 100 South looking at it from the other direction. They started raising the bridge around 12:15AM and I finally left at around 1:40AM. It was really cool to see those big cranes lift this bridge and then swing it into place. The top and sides will be in glass with a concrete base.

They currently have 700 employees in their Salt Lake City office and plan on growing it to 1,150 employees in downtown. They have signed a lease to take floors 7-14. This is awesome because that means 222 S Main is now about half full with the attorney's on the upper floors and CBRE Richard Ellis moving in as well. At this rate, it is time to get another skyscraper going downtown. Now if only, downtown can start getting some of the companies out in the burbs to come downtown where the real action is.

Also, if you are a company that is looking to move to Salt Lake City or need more office space, you have got to check out this building. It is absolutely beautiful. Right in the heart of everything. TRAX trains at your front door. City Creek Center is only a block away and in a couple of years you will be able to TRAX straight from here to the airport. It doesn't get much better than this.

T-Machttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16526444981486327524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7544206720813868762.post-35783968213047507892010-03-15T19:30:00.001-06:002010-03-15T19:31:13.470-06:00Living Downtown Well, downtown Salt Lake City is not only rising, but like a phoenix is coming back from the ashes. As we watched the old ZCMI and Crossroads Malls slowly deteriorate into a not so welcome place to go, we now have City Creek Center getting closer to completion. Granted, there are still 2 years until completely finished but with parts of it coming online, I think people are getting more excited about this project. The difference that this has with the old malls is the integration of people living downtown.
Also, a huge concern with people is that it would trap people inside the development. That the skybridge would also detract people from going down to Main Street. However, I think that with the interaction that all of these buildings have with the street, that will not be an issue. There are also many access points into this development from all directions.
Check out all of the housing that will be in this development. The first picture shows the apartments that will be above retail on the west side of Main Street.

Here is The Regent, which is a 20 story condo tower. Sorry everyone, but all 4 penthouse units have been sold or reserved.

Next you have Richards Court which stand right across from Temple Square. Both buildings are 10 story's tall. Here is a picture of the east building. Lower level retail with condos on top.

Finally we have tower 1, which the word is that it will be called The Promontory. 30 story's of condos. Beautiful all brick building which stands where The Inn on Temple Square used to be. You can see it below right between the Kearns Building and the Tribune building in the picture.

It sure is fun to watch downtown come back to life.
T-Machttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16526444981486327524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7544206720813868762.post-19149188770345875252010-03-07T22:18:00.002-07:002010-03-07T22:23:33.152-07:00Deseret Book Flagship StoreI was downtown taking photos of the City Creek Center and when I went past the Richards Court towers on South Temple, I saw the large sign in the window saying that it will be the flagship store for Deseret Book and that it will be opening conference weekend on April 2nd and 3rd. Very exciting to see parts of this project coming on line. Below you will see where the new Deseret Book will be located along with the courtyard area between the two towers. This location used to be the old entrance to Crossroads Mall. What a change that has taken place?
For those of you who remember downtown with Crossroads Mall and ZCMI Mall, it is definitely a thing of the past. Welcome to City Creek Center. This has been amazing to watch and will take our downtown to a whole new level. I am excited to see all of these new condos come online and add people to downtown. Below is a picture of The Regent. It's a 20 story condo tower on 100 South between Main Street and State Street. The glass is beautiful and changes its look quite a bit depending on the lighting. You can photograph it in the early morning and it has a greenish look to it from one angle and then you see it from a different angle and it looks dark blue. I can't wait for it to all come online. It should creat a lot of fun areas to take pictures.
This photo is taken from Temple Square in downtown. This condo tower will have amazing views of the Salt Lake Temple. It has been awesome to read in the news lately about how well all of the condos are selling. The current plan is to have Tower 2 be capped at 3 levels which will house the retail and then when the demand is there, build the remaining 17 stories. Not that my opinion matters to them much, but I think it much wiser to build the tower now. You don't have to finish the interior but at the very least build the shell and have it ready to go. Building materials right now are soooo much cheaper than they were and I only think they will go up from here as the recession fades. Here is Tower 1 towering over Temple Square.
With Temple Square being right downtown, you have some of the most beautiful gardens anywhere. Great care is taken to make the grounds extremely beautiful around the temple. Here are a couple of photos I took down at Temple Square recently with autumn in full swing. Lots more to come with City Creek Center as I am going back down there in the morning to take more shots of the progress.
West Temple between South Temple and 100 South is all torn up and being redone as part of the construction. There will be a parking entrance in the middle of the street to take you underground here. The ramp is finished and now they are ripping up the road to redo it.

The brick work also continues up Tower 1. In a month we should know the name. It is really turning out quite nice. The tower will definitely make a statement in Salt Lake City's skyline. Very impressive to view this one coming into Salt Lake from the north. It really stands out.
These two condo towers sit directly south of the Salt Lake Temple. They stand where the entrance of the Crossroads Mall once stood. They are just wrapping up and look like they are turning out pretty well. This will also be an entrance into the City Creek Center. I will continue to have updated photos of the progress as the finishing touches are put on these and the landscaping begins to come together between them. It's hard to believe that only 3 years ago, the mall once stood here with Borders books on one side and a McDonalds on the other. Much better look now. This has been one fun project to follow.
It still does not have a name and has yet to be marketed to the public. My understanding is that it will begin sales and have a name in November. The core of this building just topped off at 32 stories. Now time to finish up the penthouse and get it all closed in. The bricklayers have made a lot of progress on this building. This is the building that I would want to live in when I retire. The location is awesome. Attached to the City Creek Center. Right next to a TRAX stop, across the street from Temple Square, Abravenel Hall and the Salt Palace. For those familiar with Salt Lake City, this is being built on the exact same location as the Inn on Temple Square used to stand. It is the southeast corner of South Temple and West Temple.
It is located where the old Crossroads Mall and ZCMI Malls used to sit. After clearing both blocks a couple of years ago, construction began and has been moving at a rapid pace. On the ZCMI block, there is a condo tower being built on 100 South between Main and State Streets. This condo tower will be 20 stories tall and has a modern design. From viewing the downtownrising.com website, almost 25% of the units have already been sold including all 4 penthouse suites. Not too bad for a recession.

Our newest high-rise here in Salt Lake City is located at 222 South Main. It is a very beautiful design. The building is owned by Hamilton Partners. They have made a very large investment in Salt Lake City. They have purchased and renovated the old Boston Building, which is also on Main Street and they also own the 2 old buildings directly south of the new 222 South Main. This building will be completed in December of this year. There is a 7 level parking garage directly behind the building. The building was designed by SOM, which is also the architecture firm of the Burj Dubai, Trump Tower in Chicago and the Sears Tower.T-Machttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16526444981486327524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7544206720813868762.post-36836779136292597182009-10-02T23:21:00.006-06:002009-10-03T00:29:14.682-06:00Blog Beginnings

Alright, I have always had a love of construction.
